![]() Very few teachers including mine would have students playing out of an exercise book like Hanon for many months. ![]() You should have a roadmap what you want to do 5 years from now. A bit of looking and thinking will let you know if you're behind or ahead of where a hypothetical average student should GENERALLY be but the reality is, it's still dependent on you and your aptitude and skills.Įverybody is different. If it's too easy, then look at Preparatory level B and see if that matches closely in knowledge and technique with the pieces you're playing now. If you have to stretch, it's more advanced than where you are. You can watch/listen to videos for the level A repertoire or find the sheet music online and study it to see if you can understand it and maybe play it without having to stretch for it. At 6 months you should still be in RCM Preparatory level A or just beginning level B. There are a few videos of teachers who give lists of "this is what you should be able to do at year X." I think even those are somewhat overstated as to ability unless the student is very talented.Ī better idea of where you are versus where you think you should be is to look at/listen to RCM repertiore videos. If they weren't they wouldn't get the clicks. Take youboob accomplishment videos with a grain of salt, most of the claims are so sensationalized that they're indistinguishable from flat out lies. That's the reality of my personal skills and aptitude. Maybe by 1 1/2 years into this I'll be able to. I highly doubt I will manage it in the next couple of months. ![]() I've been playing for 11 months and I still cannot play Fur Elise. If that's about where you are then you're where you should be. The complexity of the pieces you'll play depends on your personal skills and aptitude but you should be playing mid level beginner pieces without too much difficulty after practicing. At 6 months you should be able to play consistently on the white keys in the middle of the keyboard along with 1 or 2 black keys.
